Hee lieve mensen,

Het is alweer twee weken geleden sinds het begin van mijn DTS hier in Malawi. Ik geniet enorm van mijn tijd hier en het is heel bijzonder wat God allemaal in mij aan het doen is.

Eerst eens wat uitleg over waar ik nu ben en wat we zoal doen. Ik woon nu op de basis van YWAM (Jeugd met een Opdracht) in Blantyre samen met 11 medestudenten (6 jongens en 5 meiden) en natuurlijk alle stafleden. Dus ja we zijn met 12 discipelen 😉. De eerste week was er ook nog een DTS team uit Perth (Australië) dat hier op outreach is, maar die zijn inmiddels richting het Malawimeer vertrokken.

Om jullie een beetje een idee te geven van wat we hier zoal doen, zal ik proberen uit te schrijven wat we deze weken allemaal gedaan hebben. Elke dag start met een vorm van aanbidding en bidden. De dag begint met ontbijt om 6.45 uur. Op maandag hebben we eerst een korte overdenking van een half uur om 7.30 en dan een half uur stille tijd waarin we zelf tijd met God besteden. Daarna hebben we een uur training in (profetische) voorbeden. De eerste week ging de volledige staf en het DTS team uit Perth over ons als nieuwe studenten profeteren en ik heb daar 6 pagina’s aan profetieën aan overgehouden die ik aan het toetsen ben, maar wat interessant is, is dat bijna alle profetieën dubbel zijn terwijl mensen elkaar niet hebben gehoord en soms ook dubbel van wat mensen in Nederland eerder al gesproken hadden. Dat was heel bemoedigend.

Na de voorbeden hebben we van 9.45 tot 13 uur les over het onderwerp van de week. Elke week komt er een andere spreker om ons wat te leren over het betreffende onderwerp. De eerste week was het onderwerp ‘Gods stem verstaan’ en hadden we les van een man uit Brazilië die nu al een jaar of 20 in Malawi woont. Vorige week was het onderwerp ‘De persoon Jezus en zijn werk’ en dat werd onderwezen door de leiders van onze DTS Tom en Sarah Haig uit het Verenigd Koninkrijk. Voor mij persoonlijk maakte dat meer impact dan ik had verwacht en God is echt hard aan het werk in mij.

Na de lessen krijgen we lunch en daarna is het tijd voor wat we noemen ‘lokale bedieningen/local ministries’. We zijn allemaal ingedeeld om 2 weken lang mee te lopen bij een van de bedieningen en mee te helpen. De verschillende bedieningen zijn: kinderen, jeugd, weduwen, evangelisatie, Forest (Bos) Bijbelstudie (Dit is een Bijbelstudie in het bosgebied), Bijbelstudie (deze Bijbelstudie is in de buurt van de basis). Deze week was ik ingedeeld bij de Bijbelstudie in de buurt, maar daar later meer over. Na deze lokale bedieningen eten we samen en maandagavond hebben we vrij.

Op dinsdag beginnen we weer met een overdenking en stille tijd en bidden we voor YWAM. Daarna weer lessen, lunch en lokale bedieningen. ’s Avonds hebben we dan creatieve avond. Vorige week deden we in kleine groepjes korte toneelstukjes over de YWAM waarden en de anderen moesten dan raden om welke waarde het ging. Deze week schreven we allemaal een psalm over wat God in ons leven heeft gedaan. Dat was een verrassend leuke opdracht met bijzondere resultaten. Onze groep zit echt vol creatief talent.

Op woensdag hebben we keus tussen een overdenking en wat we in het Engels soaking noemen wat letterlijk ‘weken’ betekent. Dit woord wordt ook gebruikt voor het weken van bonen in water voordat je ze gaat koken. In de christelijke context betekent het dat je tijd met God spendeert met muziek op de achtergrond en je onderdompelt in zijn aanwezigheid. Beetje vaag, maar ik weet niet hoe ik het beter uit kan leggen. Tijdens de voorbeden op woensdag bidden we voor Malawi en de rest van de dag is weer hetzelfde en ’s avonds is er community night. Dit betekent dat er met de hele community profetische aanbidding gedaan wordt. Dit houdt in dat we gaan zingen en aanbidden en als God dan dingen op mensen hun hart legt dan delen ze dat. Deze week waren we alleen met onze groep en deden we profetische oefeningen. Dit hield in dat we allemaal onze hand op een papier tekenden en ze anoniem in het midden legden en dat iedereen een papier pakte van een ander en daarvoor ging bidden en opschreef wat God hen ingaf en dan werd er gewisseld. Daarna werd de groep in tweeën gedeeld en nam de eerste groep een voorwerp van een tafel en ging de andere groep naar hen toe, bad en vertelde wat God hen op hun hart gaf over dat voorwerp en de persoon die het vast hield. Was heel bijzonder hoe God daardoorheen werkte.

Op donderdag begint de dag met een uur Engelstalige aanbidding in tegenstelling tot de andere dagen waarbij de aanbidding in Chichewa is. Na deze aanbidding doen we een gebedswandeling waarbij we door de buurt wandelen en bidden voor de mensen in de buurt. Niet perse persoonlijk maar vooral ook in het algemeen. De rest van de donderdag is weer hetzelfde als de andere dagen en ’s avonds hebben we een studieavond waarbij we geacht worden te werken aan ons wekelijkse verslag van de week en de boeken te lezen die we mogen lezen en waar we een boekrapport over moeten schrijven.

Op vrijdag begint de dag weer met de keus tussen een overdenking en soaking en daarna doen we voorbeden voor dingen wereldwijd afhankelijk van wat God opbrengt. Op vrijdag hebben we geen gewone les maar hebben we eerst een small group meeting met alleen de meiden om te bespreken hoe het gaat en daarna komt er elke week iemand vertellen welke impact hij of zij maakt voor Gods koninkrijk in Afrika. Deze week was speciaal, want we gingen ergens naartoe. We bezochten namelijk iemand die Godly farming doet. “Wat is dat?” denk je nu waarschijnlijk, maar dat zal ik proberen uit te leggen. Mijn MIL hart begon direct sneller te kloppen toen hij begon uit te leggen wat ze op dat stuk terrein proberen te doen. Ze proberen zoveel mogelijk zelfvoorzienend te zijn en gebruik te maken van lokale materialen. Een aantal gebouwen op hun terrein zijn ook volledig gemaakt van stenen die gemaakt zijn van de grond van het terrein zelf. Ze cultiveren verschillende gewassen en hebben verschillende composthopen en vangen urine en feces op om te gebruiken als mest. Naast het produceren van hun eigen voedsel zijn ze ook een trainingscentrum. Ze proberen de boeren in de omgeving te leren over duurzame landbouw waarbij er geen chemische bemesting nodig is, maar bijvoorbeeld ook het belang van mulch (het achterlaten/gebruiken van gewasresten om de bodem te beschermen tegen erosie en het teruggeven van voedingsstoffen aan de bodem). Verder houden ze ook nog wat bijen voor honing, verwarmen ze hun douchwater door een leiding die door de composthoop loopt, verwarmen ze water voor de keuken in een leiding op het dak die omringt is het aan elkaar gesmolten plastic flessen die de warmte van de zon concentreren op de buis. Dit zijn dus een soort zonnepanelen van afval. Wat ikzelf ook nog bijzonder cool vond was dat ze het fysieke van voedselproductie samenbrengen met het geestelijke. Wat ze namelijk doen is ze hebben hun land gemaakt in de vorm van Afrika met alle landen als scheidingen tussen de kleine stukjes en op elk land planten ze andere groenten. Ze bidden dan ook voor deze landen als ze erop cultiveren dat het betreffende land gezegend zal worden en goede oogsten mag hebben. Profetische landbouw dus. Aangezien ze dus niet cultiveren voor massaproductie, maar meer als trainingscentrum dienen maakt het niet uit dat de plotjes daardoor klein en onhandig van vorm zijn. 😉 Degene die dit heeft gemaakt is zelf opgegroeid in Zuid-Afrika en zijn manier van kijken naar zendelingenwerk heeft me enorm geïnspireerd. ’s Middags ging ik mee naar de lokale Bijbelstudie. Dit was eigenlijk de meest standaard vorm van Bijbelstudie die ik ken. Eerst deelde iedereen hoe het gaat met een gebedspunt en dan bidt iemand daarvoor. Daarna wordt er een Bijbeltekst gelezen en wordt deze besproken. Volgende week mag ik samen met een van mijn medestudenten deze Bijbelstudie leiden. Verder hebben we een keer in de paar weken een fun night op vrijdag. Afgelopen vrijdag betekende dat allerlei gekke spelletjes doen, van een appel uit een bak water happen tot water in een bekertje op je hoofd naar de andere kant van de kamer dragen in estafettevorm. Was erg gezellig.

Op zaterdag zijn we meestal vrij dus dat is de dag om kleren te wassen en erop uit te gaan als we willen. We mogen alleen de basis af in minimaal drietallen. Vorige week zijn we even naar de lokale markt geweest om bananen te kopen en daarna ben ik met twee van de Malawiaanse meiden gaan zwemmen in ons zwembad op de basis. Deze twee meiden kunnen alleen nog niet zwemmen dus ik heb ze geprobeerd hun eerste zwemles te geven, maar drijven blijkt al heel moeilijk te zijn. Was wel heel gezellig! Deze week zijn we met alle meiden pizza gaan eten in een winkelcentrum waar we ook even naar de supermarkt gingen. Als Westerse meiden hebben we de anderen getrakteerd want de Malawiaanse meiden hebben niet echt eigen geld en een aantal hebben hun schoolfees nog niet eens betaald en binnenkort komen daar nog de kosten van outreach bij. De verhalen en getuigenissen van de Malawianen in onze groep maken me wel echt weer heel bewust van hoe gezegend ik opgegroeid ben met altijd meer dan genoeg. Veel van de mensen in onze groep hebben serieuze honger meegemaakt in hun leven van dagenlang niets kunnen eten. Heel heftig om die verhalen te horen en te beseffen dat dat de realiteit is voor velen. Het is niet of ik me dat nooit eerder beseft heb, maar op deze manier komt het wel nog dichterbij. Ik, maar ik denk nog wel meer Nederlanders met mij, mogen echt wel wat dankbaarder zijn voor wat we allemaal hebben en hoe goed we het hebben.

Op zondag gaan we naar een lokale kerk, soms mogen we kiezen, soms kiest de leiding voor ons. Wel leuk om zo wat verschillende Malawiaanse kerken te zien. Binnenkort zullen wij ook degenen zijn die zullen preken in deze kerken. De rest van de zondag is weer vrij en op zondagavond hebben we Karibu night. ‘Karibu’ wordt in Malawi gebruikt als een woord om iemand uit te nodigen om mee te eten, ‘kom en eet met mij’. Tijdens deze avond eten we met de YWAM community en niet alleen met ons eigen team zoals de andere dagen en worden we uitgenodigd om te delen. Dit kan zijn het delen van eten, maar ook bijvoorbeeld een lied, een gedicht, een raadsel of een spel. Momenteel ben ik met een van mijn medestudenten een aanbiddingslied aan het schrijven. Wellicht krijgen jullie dat binnenkort nog eens te horen.

Deze week gaat over ‘Heelheid in Christus/Wholeness in Christ’. Dit wordt ons onderwezen door een jong koppel uit Malawi en ik kijk ernaaruit wat er nog meer gaat komen. Ik denk dat het nog wel eens een heftige week kan worden aangezien het gaat over God toelaten in de beschadigde delen van je leven, de delen die je hebt proberen te verbergen. Ik ben benieuwd wat God daarin gaat doen. De afgelopen weken is God ook al druk bezig geweest in mij en het is heel bijzonder om mee te maken hoe dingen die eerder uitgesproken zijn in profetieën ook tot uiting aan het komen zijn.

Nou dat waren mijn afgelopen weken in het kort. God is hard aan het werk in mij en het schema is vrij druk, maar ik geniet enorm van hier zijn en ook al zijn sommige processen pijnlijk ik weet dat het goed is. Ik hoop dat dit een beetje een idee geeft van wat ik hier doe. Hieronder zal ik nog wat gebedspunten delen voor degenen die voor me willen bidden. Dear people,

It's been two weeks since my DTS started here in Malawi. I really enjoy my time here and it is very special what God is doing inside of me.

First some explanation about where I am now and what we do. I currently live on the basis of YWAM (Youth with a Mission) in Blantyre together with 11 fellow students (6 boys and 5 girls) and of course all staff members. So yes we are with 12 disciples 😉. The first week there was also a DTS team from Perth (Australia) that is on outreach here, but by now they have left for outreach at Lake Malawi.

To give you a little idea of ​​what we are doing here, I will try to write out what we have been doing these weeks. The day starts with breakfast at 6.45 a.m. and after we have some form of worship and prayer. On Monday we first have a short reflection/devotion of half an hour at 7.30 and then a half hour silent time in which we spend time with God ourselves. Then we have an hour of training in (prophetic) intercession. The first week the entire staff and the DTS team from Perth was prophesying to us as new students and I have 6 pages of prophecies that I am currently testing. What's interesting is that almost all prophecies are double while people have not heard each other and sometimes even confirmations from what people in the Netherlands had spoken before. That was very encouraging.

After the intercessions we have lessons on the topic of the week from 9.45 am to 1 pm. Every week another speaker comes to teach us something about the subject of the week. The first week the subject was "hearing God's voice" and we had lessons from a man from Brazil who has been living in Malawi for around 20 years. Last week the topic was "The Person of Jesus and His work," and that was taught by the leaders of our DTS Tom and Sarah Haig from the UK. For me personally that made more impact than I expected and God is really working hard inside of me.

After the lessons we get lunch and then it's time for what we call "local ministries". We are all assigned to help out at one of the ministries for a few weeks each. The different ministries are: children, youth, widows, evangelism, Forest (Bible) Bible study (This is a Bible study in the forest area), Bible study (this Bible study is near the base). This week I was assigned to the Bible study in the neighbourhood, but more about that later. After these local ministries we eat together and we have an evening off on Monday.

On Tuesday we start again with a meditation and quiet time and we pray for YWAM. Then again lessons, lunch and local ministries. In the evening we have a creative evening. Last week we did short plays about the YWAM values ​​in small groups and the others had to guess what the value was. This week we all wrote a psalm about what God has done in our lives. That was a surprisingly nice assignment with beautiful results. Our group is really full of creative talent.

On Wednesday we have a choice between a devotion and what we call ‘soaking’ in English. This word is also used to explain the process of soaking beans in water before you cook them. In the Christian context it means that you spend time with God with music in the background and soak yourself in his presence. Slightly vague, but I don't know how to explain it better. During intercession prayers on Wednesday we pray for Malawi and the rest of the day is the same again and in the evening there is community night. This means that prophetic worship is done with the entire YWAM community. We start with singing and worshiping and when God puts things on people's hearts, they share that. This week we were alone with our group and did prophetic exercises. The exercise we did this week was to all drew our hand on a paper and placed them anonymously in the middle and that everyone took a paper from another and prayed for it and wrote down what God told them and then they changed. Then the group was divided in two, and the first group took an item from a table and the other group went to them, prayed, and told what God gave them on their hearts about that item and the person holding it. Was very special how God worked through all that.

On Thursday, the day starts with an hour of worship in English, unlike the other days where the praise and worship is in Chichewa. After this worship we do a prayer walk where we walk through the neighbourhood and pray for the people in the neighbourhood. Not necessarily personally but more just in general while walking. The rest of the Thursday is again the same as the other days and in the evening we have a study evening where we are supposed to work on our weekly report of the week and read the books that we are supposed to read and on which we must write a book report.

On Friday, the day starts again with a choice between a devotion and soaking, and then we intercede for things worldwide depending on what God is leading us to pray about. On Friday we don't have a regular class but first we have a small group meeting with the girls and boys separately to discuss how things are going and then after that every week someone comes to tell us what impact he or she is making for God's kingdom in Africa. This week was special because we were going somewhere. We visited someone who does ‘Godly farming’. "What is that?" you probably wonder, but I will try to explain that. My MIL heart immediately started beating faster when he started to explain what they are trying to do on that piece of land. They try to be as self-sufficient as possible and to use local materials. A number of buildings on their site are also made entirely of stones made from the ground of the site itself. They cultivate different crops and have different compost heaps and collect urine and faeces to use as fertilizer. In addition to producing their own food, they are also a training centre. They try to teach local farmers about sustainable agriculture that does not require chemical fertilization, but also the importance of mulch (leaving behind / using crop residues to protect the soil against erosion and returning nutrients to the soil) . They also keep some bees for honey, they heat their shower water through a pipe that runs through the compost heap, they heat water for the kitchen in a pipe on the roof that is put inside plastic bottles that are joined together that concentrate the heat of the sun on the tube. It functions a bit like a solar panel made of waste. What I found particularly cool was that they combine the physical of food production with the spiritual. Because what they do is they have made their plot in the shape of Africa with all countries as small plots within and on each country they plant different vegetables. They also pray for these countries if they cultivate there that the country will be blessed and may have good harvests. Prophetic agriculture, really cool. Since they do not cultivate for mass production, but rather serve as a training centre, it does not matter that the plots are therefore small and awkward in shape. 😉 The person who made this grew up in South Africa himself and his way of looking at missionary work inspired me enormously. In the afternoon I went to the local Bible study. This was actually the most standard form of Bible study I know. First everyone shared how they are doing including a prayer point and then someone prays for it. Then a Bible text is read and discussed. Next week I will lead this Bible study with one of my fellow students. We also have a fun night on Friday once every few weeks. Last Friday meant doing all kinds of crazy games, from eating an apple from a bowl of water to carrying water in a cup on your head to the other side of the room in relay form. Was very nice.

On Saturdays we are usually free so that is the day to wash clothes and go out if we want. We can only leave the base in a minimum of three. Last week we went to the local market to buy bananas and then I went swimming with two of the Malawian girls in our base pool. These two girls can't swim yet so I tried to give them their first swimming lesson, but floating already seems to be very difficult. Was very nice though! This week we went out to eat pizza with all the girls in a mall where we also went to the supermarket. As Western girls we treated the others because the Malawian girls do not really have their own money and some have not even paid their school fees and soon the costs of outreach will be added. The stories and testimonies of the Malawians in our group really make me very aware of how blessed I grew up with always more than enough. Many of the people in our group have experienced serious hunger in their lifetime of not being able to eat for days. Very intense to hear those stories and to realize that that is the reality for many. It is not as if I have never realized this before, but it is getting closer this way. I, but I think even more Dutch people with me, may really be more grateful for what we all have and how good we have it.

On Sunday we go to a local church, sometimes we can choose, sometimes the leadership chooses for us. Nice to see some different Malawian churches. Soon we will also be the ones who will preach in these churches. The rest of Sunday is free again and on Sunday evening we have Karibu night. "Karibu" is used in Malawi as a word to invite someone to eat with, "come and eat with me." During this evening we eat with the YWAM community and not only with our own team like the other days and we are invited to share. This can be sharing food, but also, for example, a song, a poem, a mystery or a game. I am currently writing a worship song with one of my fellow students. Perhaps you will hear that again soon.

This week is about "Wholeness in Christ". This is being taught to us by a young couple from Malawi and I am looking forward to what else is coming. I think it can be a tough week because it's about allowing God into the damaged parts of your life, the parts you've tried to hide. I'm curious what God will do in it. God has been busy in me for the past few weeks and it is very special to experience how things that have been said in prophecies have also been expressed.

Well those were my past weeks in short. God is hard at work in me and the schedule is quite busy, but I enjoy being here enormously and even though some processes are painful I know it's good. I hope this gives a bit of an idea of ​​what I am doing here. Below I will share some prayer points for those who want to pray for me.
