Hee lieve mensen,

Bedankt voor alle reacties op mijn eerste blog! Mijn tweede werkweek is alweer bezig dus ik dacht ik zal eens een update geven over de afgelopen week.

Zoals ik in mijn vorige blog vertelde was vorige week maandag mijn eerste dag op het SMART Centre. Rianne had me aangeboden dat ik wel met haar mee mocht rijden en dat ze me dan even uit zou leggen hoe de gedeelde taxi’s precies werken dus zo gezegd zo gedaan.

Maandagochtend liep ik door de regenachtige straten van Mzuzu naar het huis van Rianne en Reinier, iets meer dan een half uur lopen bij mij vandaan. Regen?! Ja! Het is hier in tegenstelling tot Nederland afgelopen week vooral heel koud en regenachtig geweest dus ik heb gewerkt met vest aan en sjaal om. Ik ben door de dagen heen dan ook best verkouden geworden.

Aangekomen op het kantoor werd ik voorgesteld aan mijn collegas en kreeg ik nog een rondleiding van Andrew. Medass, Andrew en ik zullen samen het project in Livingstonia gaan doen. Tot dusver lijken we goed met elkaar op te kunnen schieten dus dat is fijn. Op het SMART Centre worden trainingen gegeven aan mensen om boreholes te drillen, pompen te maken en dat op de markt te brengen dus er is een werkplaats en wat showmodellen van pompen. Binnenkort hoop ik wat foto’s op facebook te kunnen zetten.

Reinier was afgelopen week in Kenia, en Hans, onze project coordinator voor Livingstonia was er ook maar heel even om het SMART Centre aan zijn familie te laten zien die op bezoek zijn. Hij heeft wat eerste dingen met ons doorgenomen, maar veel is nog onduidelijk. Deze week zal alles waarschijnlijk wat meer vorm gaan aannemen. In de tussentijd bestond mijn tijd vooral uit documenten lezen en proberen wat te leren over verschillende pijpen en zwaartekrachtgeleide watersystemen (gravity fed water systems).

Aan het eind van de eerste dag nam Rianne me nog even mee naar de markt om groente te kopen. Leuk om weer rond te lopen op zo’n markt en wat een variëteit aan groenten hier! Super fijn! Deze keer kocht ik courgette, wortels, ui, aardappels, groene paprika’s en bananen. Verder bleek openbaar vervoer hier weer iets anders te zijn dan in Tanzania. De kleine busjes zijn hier ook, maar daarnaast is er een systeem van gedeelde taxi’s. Deze auto’s rijden vaste routes en zijn dus heel makkelijk in gebruik. Een ritje van de taxistandplaats naar waar ik eruit moet voor mijn werk is 300 kwacha (ong. 35 eurocent) Een ander vervoersmiddel zijn fietstaxi’s, letterlijk fietsen waarbij je achterop kan. Ik voel me niet geroepen om die te proberen. Waar ik gedurende de week wel achter kwam is dat een van mijn collega’s bij me in de straat woont en met de auto naar het werk gaat, daar kon ik dus mee meerijden! Super fijn! Dat is natuurlijk nog makkelijker dan de taxi’s!

Wat ook wel interessant en fijn was, was dat we deze week bijna continue stroom hebben gehad! Kennelijk was de president in de stad en dan kan er ineens wel continue stroom zijn terwijl er normaal elke dag wel een tijdsperiode geen stroom is begreep ik van Rianne en Milla. Nou we zullen het zien de komende tijd.

Tijdens deze week heb ik verder Lexa ontmoet via pastor Roy 2 uit Lilongwe. Zij is onderdeel van het worship team in Fountain of Victory International church. Ik ben even bij haar thuis geweest en zij is meegelopen naar mijn huis. Zaterdag was er een dag met kerkactiviteiten voor de jeugd waar ik bij ben geweest, de dag bestond oa uit 2 kerkdiensten, wat gedichten en liedjes en een carrierepraatje. Vooral de worship deed me erg goed. Verder is het een pinksterkerk op z’n Afrikaans zullen we maar zeggen. Het is niet helemaal mijn ding, en bij sommige dingen heb ik wat vraagtekens, maar de mensen zijn erg open en vriendelijk dus ik besloot zondag weer te gaan. Ook zondag waren er ook weer twee diensten dus zo was mijn weekend snel om. Wel leuk om deze mensen beter te leren kennen.

Maandagochtend heb ik de eerste pastor Roy weer ontmoet die op weg was naar zijn familie in Tanzania. Super leuk om hem weer even te zien! Daarna weer naar kantoor geweest. Vanmiddag kan ik hopelijk in gesprek met Hans en Reinier om de plannen voor het project iets concreter te maken en om met het team het project wat concreter voor te bereiden.

Aangezien de president weer weg is hebben we al weer de nodige powercuts gehad en lijken we terug in hun oude schema te zijn. Tot zover mijn avonturen van deze week. Zoals jullie lezen vermaak ik me wel. Ik hoop ook weer wat van jullie te horen uit het warme Nederland (stuur aub wat warmte hierheen!) Tot de volgende blog!

Dear people,

Thanks for all the comments on my first blog! My second work week has already started so I thought I will give an update about the past week.

As I said in my last blog, last Monday was my first day at the SMART Centre. Rianne had offered me to join her as she would go to work by car and  she told me she would explain to me how the shared taxis work exactly. So that’s exactly what we did. Monday morning I walked through the rainy streets of Mzuzu to the house of Rianne and Reinier, a little more than an half-an-hour-walk away from me. Rain?! Yes! In contrast to the Netherlands this week it has been very cold and rainy, so I worked wearing a vest and a scarf.

Arriving at the office on Monday I was introduced to my colleagues and I got a tour of Andrew. Medass, Andrew and I will do the project in Livingstonia together. So far we seem to get along well so that’s really nice. At the SMART Centre, training is given to people to drill boreholes, to make pumps and to put them on the market, so there is a workshop and some show models of pumps. Soon I hope to be able to put some pictures on facebook.

Reinier was in Kenya for a conference last week, and Hans, our project coordinator for Livingstonia, was only around for a short while to show the SMART Centre to his family who was visiting. He has gone through some of the first things with us, but much is still unclear. This week everything will get a bit more shape hopefully. Meanwhile, my time mainly consisted of reading documents and trying to learn about different pipes and gravity-fed water systems.

At the end of the first day, Rianne took me to the market to buy vegetables. Nice to walk around again on such a market and what a variety of vegetables here! Super nice! This time I bought zucchini, carrots, onion, potatoes, green peppers and bananas. Furthermore, public transport turned out to be a bit different here than in Tanzania. The small vans are here as well, but there is also a system of shared taxis. These cars drive fixed routes and are therefore very easy to use. A ride from the taxi stand to where I drop to reach the office is 300 kwacha (approx. 35 eurocent). Another means of transport are bicycle taxis, literally bicycles where you can sit on the back. I don’t really feel called to try that. During the week I found out that one of my colleagues lives with me in the same street and goes to work by car, so I could ride with him! That was a nice surprise! That is of course even easier than taxis!

What was also interesting and nice was that we had almost continuous power this week! Apparently the president was in the city and then suddenly there can be continuous power, while normally every day has a period of time with no power I understood from Rianne and Milla. Well we will see how that develops the coming week.

During this week I also met Lexa via pastor Roy 2 from Lilongwe. She is part of the worship team at Fountain of Victory International church. I went to her home and she walked with me to my house. On Saturday this church had some activities for the youth so I attended. Tthe day consisted of 2 church services, some poems and songs and a career talk. I especially enjoyed worshipping again. I am not sure what else to say about it. It is an African Pentecostal church. Still it is a bit different than the one I join at home. This one is not entirely my thing, and I have some doubts about some things, but the people were very open and friendly so I decided to go again on Sunday. Also on Sunday there were also two services so my weekend passed quickly. I really enjoyed to get to know these people better.

On Monday morning I met the first pastor Roy who was on his way to his family in Tanzania. Super nice to see him again! Then back to the office again.

This afternoon I hope to have a meeting with Hans and Reinier to make the plans for the project more concrete and to prepare the project more concretely with the team.

Since the president is gone again we have already had the necessary power cuts and we seem to be back in their old schedule. So far my adventures of this week. As you read, I am enjoying my time here. Looking forward you your responses again.
